The Cheat-Clover and Atlas

Anxiety

Feature Photo by Hannah Myers

“Atee, it’s Clover. You got a minute?”

 “Sounds serious, everything okay?”

“Atee, we need to meet.” The sea breeze forced its way into the telephone booth and beach sand stung her legs.

“I’m fine, but we need to talk.” “Something wrong Clover?” “Nothing’s wrong. Look Atee if I called asking to be laid, would we have this inquiry session? No, we wouldn’t. So, message me a time and place.”

Click! Clover hung up. The phone rang, answered only by the howling wind tossing plastic bags into the air, and discarded coffee cups rolling along the sidewalk. What the hell has got into that woman, Atlas asked himself, shutting his return call down.

The bottle of bourbon stood flanked by two glasses and an ice bucket. Atlas sat in the moth-eaten easy chair; ice crackled as bourbon washed over into the glass. With two criminal cases back-to-back this week, he didn’t need this. What’s gotten into her, so seriously agitated? The purposeful knock at the door barged into his thoughts. Clover stood, her eyes glaring at him. Stepping into the room, she went to the side table and poured herself a double shot, swallowing it in one gulp.

Her behavior stunned Atlas and shaking he topped their glasses. The two sat. “You must have had a really hard time finding this shithole Atee, you’ve never done this before. Open the blinds it’s dingy in here, stinks too.” “We have got to be more discreet if Jessie finds out…” “Oh, your beloved wife of 30 years you mean!” Clover interjected, yelling. “Clover, what’s got into you?” “A baby, that’s what’s got into me, I’m three weeks and counting.” “What are you going to do, get rid of it?” “In one deft movement, Clover slid out of the chair and slapped Atlas across the face. His glass went tumbling onto the carpet; ashen-faced with a visible three-finger imprint on his cheek, Atlas fell back into the chair.

“You bastard, you want me to kill my child? You’re a psycho. I will never do that! This child will grow up with the best of everything. I think I might even sign for an undergraduate in Cambridge, our child will study law at the best facility. After all, this little one will have two lawyers as parents, won’t that be grand? “What about Jessie?” “I don’t care about Jessie, I have my baby, and Jessie’s yours; the difference is I will not be sharing her costs with you. She may not ever find out about your other floozies, but she will certainly know about this one.”

The door slammed, Atlas went over and sat on the bed, twisting his fingers and then combing them through his hair. “I’m ruined!” He muttered painfully.

To Cheat is like throwing a boomerang, it will always return to you. When your cheat returns to you it will be very hurtful.

Concentration-Wisdom Snippets From Peter.

concentration

Feature Photo by Artur Shamsutdinov upsplash.com

With my life, the end is never in sight, so I’m left with a concentration on the present – whoever designed this concept is brilliant!

In my life, I have a loving, caring, uncomplaining wife, she is a gem of a woman. And I love her so.

I wonder how much of my life is divinely inspired, influenced, controlled? There appears to be a strong current flowing through it. When I swim against it, I struggle; when I release my grip, I drift with the current.

Focusing on my dreams, developing emotions for them, and seeing them in the light of now, not tomorrow, helps them come to pass.

What has been given to me in this life is a gift. As I share it with others It increases the value of what I have been given, by at least a hundred times or more.

I have a backpacker nature, and as my stay in this world is temporary, I will not shoulder any inessential loads whatsoever and will travel light.

I have been searching for ways to improve my focus and concentration, it’s not easy.

Weekly Words of Wisdom – Little Irritants.

Now

Feature Photo By Brett Jordan Upsplash.com

Little Irritants.

The other day I woke up to the fact that I allow too many little irritants to spoil the state of peace in my mind. You know the kind; the little Yorkie yapping through the day unceasingly (or so it seems.) The teens next door alternating between hip-hop and gaming shrieks at max volume. The construction team over the road taking turns on a jackhammer, to the strains of Elvis’s, “I’m All Shook Up.” (I’m exaggerating.) In all this external chaos, I reflected on an ancient scripture; “Let us use the little foxes; you know the ones that nibble away at our grapevines…” (My translation.)

Be patient, I’m getting to my point.

The vine is the state of my peaceful mind. The little foxes are the external disruptions to my mind and finally, stolen fruits, are the reaction to my thoughts. These will lead to hostile emotions arising from my thoughts. The result is little irritants spoil the peace of my mind.

For the most part, I can do nothing about the irritants.

But I am able to take charge of my thoughts and the way I do this is; for a brief moment, I consider the thoughts that are arising in my mind, not the irritants, just thoughts about them. I let the thoughts leave my space. Now I’m living in a space that is ‘real.’ This allows me to focus on my life as it is and what I’m about doing now. My thoughts are not entangled with the past or engrossed in the future. When I began reading the words of Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now,” I found it difficult to grasp the concept at first, with perseverance, I eventually did. More importantly, I now began to apply it.

As a person, I was haunted by many aspects of my childhood, youth, and later adulthood.

Later I created many things in my life, of which I was not proud. These too, regularly pierced through my mind. Unawares, I was nurturing thoughts that would create feelings within me. Dependent on the severity and frequency of these feelings, they would result in disastrous changes throughout my life. Taking the advice of Eckhart Tolle I made a commitment to stop nurturing toxic thoughts, trading them for concentrating on what is happening now in my life. I no longer entertain backward thinking, I leave that to the past. Living in the now moment is a timeless fact.

“Who buries their heart in the sands of the past, faces barrenness in their future.”

I forget my past. I plan my future, but do not live there.

Weekly Words of Wisdom – Now Power.

Now Power

Who buries their heart in the sands of the past, faces barrenness in their future. At this moment now, time does not exist and I live in a space that is ‘real.’ This allows me to focus on my life as it is and what I’m about doing now. Weekly Words of Wisdom Friends.

Friends

Feature Photo by 🇸🇮 Janko Ferlič Upsplash.com

In recent times, as the topic of friendship has been raised in my company, I have begun to question, in my own mind, what it means to have friends.

I’ll tell you why. Over the very long span of my life, I have had very few friends. By my definition, friends being those people to whom I’m am close, people I love, and make connections regularly. Yet, if I use this definition, I realize that all of these terms apply to my own family members. (I have a very large family and extended family members – and it grows by the year!)

With all of this now, it begs the question – what are friends? Over the years I have made many, many acquaintances (I am quite clear on this definition.) None of these, however, would fit the description of ‘friends’ as the generally accepted definition of the word goes. I have often heard the statement, “She/he is not just my wife/husband she/he is also my friend.”

From this, I glean that family members and partners can also be friends. This makes me feel much better now, as far as friends are concerned and certainly broadens the scope for me.

Wife in a Million

She is a woman among women, is my wife. She loves me in the truest sense of that beautiful word. She has always cared for me in every aspect of my life, nurturing me in my aspirations and applauding my successes, no matter how small.

She is compassionate, kind, and thoughtful in so many ways. She is fiery though, and never tolerates a wrong word or action from anyone and especially not from me! She is the hardest worker I know and is fully committed to performing her tasks, both domestic and business. Everything she does is done well.

She is a spotlessly clean lady who always looks top drawer and I’m proud to be seen with her. She keeps our home in prime condition and me trim too. Laughing is one of her favorite activities and she loves me reading stories to her. We have never lost the art of kissing and expressing our love for each other; and at at the end of each day she tucks me up in bed and gives a goodnight kiss.

I am a man, blessed out of my socks!

Why Write? – Part Eight

Please Note This Course is Completely Free of Charge

If you have just joined us, then you need to read previous editions in the series, you will find these here:

With each publication in this series, I was giving you assignments to do and asked you to return these to me for editing. This way you sent in your effort, which I called a ‘submission’ and I send back a ‘correction’ to you. In doing this, you ended up with a comparison.

If you have just joined us, you are free to submit the earlier assignments to us for correction, to help get you started.

Otherwise I have discontinued this routine for practical reasons.

As discussed in part Seven, discipline is a vital characteristic for a writer. As discipline is a learned state, we can all, with no exception, develop the habit. If you are a competitive sports person, fitness of body and mind as well as honing the skills required for your particular brand of sport are all essential factors.

Competitive sports people set markers along the pathway to achieving their goals; by virtue of the fact that this system is used world-over, it is probably achieving its purpose.

Writing is no different.

As writers, each of us can use the system above to reach our dreams and I am sure many authors will attest its success.

Best selling author Paulo Coelho wrote that, early in his career, he set down to write at 8 am. Took time off for lunch then worked on to five pm. From what I recall, his wife was influential in helping him to apply this discipline. In more recent times he attests to first thing, spending time finding reasons to avoid starting his writing. Once he starts he will write onwards through the day into the night.

Setting a goal and then staging markers to the point of completion, did not work for me. This maybe something to do with the fact that I am a pantser and or the fact that I was officially diagnosed ADD.

What has produced results for me, so far, is at prescribed times I sit down and write for as many hours as I have available. This is my discipline. I think that I am extremely fortunate, inasmuch as I love writing so much, it is not difficult for me to start writing and continue for hours on end, punching out about 800 to 1500 words an hour. Thank God, so far, I have never had ‘writer’s block.’

Bottom line though, is disciplining myself to write at prescribed times. Disciplining myself to set about my home-based business, in order that my bank balance stays out the red. Assisting my wife wherever and whenever she allows me to do so. Fortunately, my wife’s passion is to see me achieve – for this I shall be eternally grateful.

I have discovered this discipline has allowed me to accomplish without goals and markers. Discipline has kept me in that place where my passion is allowed to drive my creativity and send me across the finish-line of accomplishment.

In short, get down and do it – consistently.

That behind us, let us touch on two important writing points:

  1. Over Used Words.

These words I tend to overuse: ‘that, and, so, was, then, also, great…..’the list is endless. Visit this link: https://www.grammarly.com/blog/common-adjectives/

In my opinion overused words water down our creativity. Diluted creativity bores our readers and is a sure sign of immaturity. You would be quite surprised if you went over your recent writing efforts and see how many of these words you use sub conscientiously.

Try this exercise: Without giving it any thought write a quick seventy-five words; you should be well equipped to do this by now. Take the completed article and see how many over-used words you can find.

Rewrite the article removing these words and replacing them with more imaginative one’s. In many cases this will require a change of layout in your sentences. You may even have to completely rewrite certain sentences.

Once you have completed this, you will be surprised at what a far more interesting article you have written.

  1. Use of dull unimaginative words, especially adjectives and verbs.

Take your rewritten piece above and now set about changing as many words with others. Try this link:  https://www.merriam-webster.com/thesaurus/. You will find interesting synonyms here.

On finishing this exercise, compare your present article with the first and you will be pleasantly surprised.
