Lockdown!

Lockdown

Our President placed this country under lockdown as at midnight on Thursday, March 26th. 2020. And this was my take on the issue at that time:

The Family Scene

My immediate family, of which I am the oldest, consists of two children and five grandchildren. specifically, the family live in five different homes within a twenty five kilometer radius of one another.

‘Lockdown’ for me is a first-timer, never having experienced it before.

Growing up in the latter part of the great war and living in post war times was tough. Further, my father and three uncles were part of the war machine. As a result one uncle was killed and thankfully my father and two uncles came home to us.

I watched two sons conscripted into the war machine in the ‘80’s. Both came home alive, one was wounded and recovered physically, but never psychologically.

Thankfully my grandchildren have grown, one in his teens, four into their twenties. Two have university degrees and three are on their way; all have good homes.

Onset of Covid 19

At the onset of Covid-19, my grandchildren, faced with far greater media hype than I ever experienced, were placed in a situation of doubt and concern. Notwithstanding their access to information on the internet and research skills. They acquired these in the course of their education.

We parents are faced with both the concerns for our children and the economy of our country. Our Country has a population of fifty seven million souls. Six million of this number live in our city. We are concerned for our own small businesses, the livelihood of which supports our family. But our biggest concern is for the potential physical effects of the virus upon our population. Being  a third world country, we could not cope with a pandemic, like say, Italy!

Our Country

In this country, we have the best government since 1994. Our President and Minister of Finance are very capable men (my opinion). So, from a security and economic perspective we have a small chance.

The greater percentage of our people are not familiar with preventative measures that need to be applied. In addition our country has very limited medical resources to cope with the size of our population. “Solum habemus fide in Deum – In God alone we trust.”

Our government, businesses and many responsible people, seemed to have galvanized themselves into action.

How Can We Help?

My Grandchildren asked me what more could be done to help. I replied, following good hygienic preventative measures and obeying what our government has instructed.

What I told them was: we need to look in another direction. Into that lesser understood place within ourselves. That place from which we receive priceless advice, honest advice, advice we are able to rely on.

What is our First Reaction Normally?

When some traumatic event affecting our family, our community, country, the globe, our first turn is to fear. Fear of dying, losing a family member, relative, friend. Afraid of lack, of material loss, of unemployment, the list is endless. At this point we seek advice from wherever we can source it, reliable or otherwise. After which, we worry, even to the point of illness.

What Should We Do?

With any catastrophe there are certainly two issues that will arise in it’s wake, we:

  • can do nothing to change the course of the catastrophe.
  • are powerless to do anything about the (possibly major) changes that will take place in our lives.

It is imperative we accept the fact that the only place where we can make decisions affecting our future  is now. In this moment. The past is too late and the ‘future’, in reality, does not exist.

If we refuse to act in this moment now, after a night’s sleep, we will be in what we called ‘tomorrow and has become ‘now.’

My Fortunate Escape.

Where I was raised, there was a common saying, “Next year will be better.” I left that country eventually, not by choice. The decision I had to make was almost immediate and I realize now that it was made in a moment called now. That ‘now’ was made fifty years ago and I am so grateful that I made the move. since then I have watched that country fall lower than its knees. Laid waste by corrupt, greedy politicians.

Going Forward.

We consult our inner selves now and plan as to how we will live our lives.  Irrespective what our decisions are, this will  allow us to navigate from today’s now, onward.

It will allow us to plan ahead, because that is wise. Plan, building our life’s foundations on a solid rock now, not waiting for the elusive ‘tomorrow.’

It will allow us to live every moment of our lives in the now. Because neither the past nor the future exist – the only time is, now.

We have been given a lockdown; an opportunity to:

  • Evaluate our relationships, spiritual and human.
  • Find things for which we need to be grateful.
  • Establish what is beneficial in our lives now and discard the unprofitable.
  • Asses what we tolerate and get rid of what’s useless for us to tolerate.

This list is by no means exhaustive.

This moment NOW is where we have been offered a window of time to consider, what changes we can make. This must be done before changes, over which we have no control, move in first.

Don’t waste this space pondering on what could happen, just make it happen.

Identity-Wisdom Snippets From Peter.

Identity

Feature Photo Dainis Graveris Upsplash.com

My true identity is me, not the thoughts in my mind. While the thoughts in my mind are placed there by the ego – the speaker, I am the listener. What is most important is how I respond to what I hear. If thoughts engender such things as fear, doubt, anxiety, and multitudes of other negatives, I simply observe them and then, allow them to drift out of my mind. If thoughts of love, joy, peace excitement and such fill me, I embrace them fully.

I am determined to be happy every day of my life. To say nothing of the fact that I never have to wait and see what the day brings. Additionally, I walk happily into each day irrespective of what it may bring.

This is wise thought management, considering that thoughts become actions and these will have future consequences, it is vital I choose correctly.

When I make a statement regarding myself, I put it out there for all to see; that way I had better live up to what I say.

I recall when my mind was opened up to what my life and identity were all about, there was enormous freedom that resulted; it was like a surgical lamp that shone into my innermost, and under the lamp, all the darkness vanished.

Joyful-Wisdom Snippets From Peter.

Joyful

Feature Photo by Kolby Milton Upsplash.com

My life was given to fashion as I will. Many of those around me do not have the will to make for themselves a joyful life and beg scraps instead. There are the few who sit at the captain’s table and enjoy the meal, having a joyful life. The choice is mine.

All my life, as sure as the sun rises, I have lived with effects. But the lesser-known to me were the causes. Yet, I am comfortable in my skin (it fits well) so who cares?

I see each day as absolutely brand new, with different elements flowing in from all directions. If it were not so, my life would be intensely dull, don’t you think?

Fear of what others may say or do used to rule my life. So I broke out of that prison and now I hold the say and do key. What a relief – I am a completely different person.

Path-Wisdom Snippets From Peter

Path & Lighthouse

Feature Photo by William Bout Upsplash.com

There are times when I am seeking a path. Then there are times when I have to create my path.

When the light within me pours forth, the way ahead becomes clear.

I have no fear of slip-ups in my life. It has been my experience that these often lead to successful accomplishments.

It is said, “The eyes are the windows of the soul.” I am comforted by these words, as it means the peace within me becomes visible, through my eyes, for all to see.

Being able to influence my fellow humans, for their benefit, by my life, is deeply satisfying.

There are those of us who find that our lives are without enough meaning. We ask ourselves questions like, what am I doing in this life? What is my life’s purpose?

We all have the answers to our questions within us.

I’m the only one that can provide myself with the answers to these questions. The simple truth is that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all.’ The one common factor is this; we need direction that will take us to our purpose. But we need also be careful here, as ‘purpose’ in itself is not necessarily a destination. I think it’s more likely to be a journey.

Let me use one of my favorite examples: the onion (I love the red ones.) I set about peeling the outer layer to reach the skin. And what do I find? Another skin. If you’ve never peeled an onion before (you are declared a rare animal), you will find another skin. This process will continue until you have nothing!

Well, not quite nothing. You have at least accomplished your purpose; discovering the onion. Examined more closely, you have, in addition, a fair amount of skins that are useful for flavoring your cooking or salad. You have now found two purposes; discovering an onion and creating a meal supplement. Isn’t this marvelous?

We all have multiple purposes in our lives.

In essence, you may have multiple purposes in your life. You ask yourself, but how do I find even one purpose, let alone many? The answer is direction. Yes, direction, you read correctly.

I found an excellent article on direction, and for this reason, I’m handing you over to Rebecca.

Breathing-Wisdom Snippets From Peter

Breathe

Feature Photo Brett Jordan Upsplash.com

Four Wisdom Snippets To Help With Your Breathing.

Isn’t it interesting? Fear, which never gives up trying to imprison me, disappears with my breathing in and out deeply. This tells me fear is not real, breathing is!

I am an explorer, as such I have a fascinating life; discovering beautiful interesting people, places, events, and myriads of other special tangibles. Often I write about these and share them with others. Nowadays any one of us can explore without even leaving home – isn’t that wonderful?

I live in a binary world. One world is physical, the world of senses; the other ethereal, the world of Spirit. One I touch with my senses and the other, I touch in the Spirit.

I’m sure there is no possibility for me to ‘stand still’ I must move forward or by default, slide backward. I say this because I know my environment is changing quicker than my breathing.

Grief-Peter’s Quote for The Day.

Grief

Feature Photo by Ann Upsplash.com

Deal With Your Grief.

Grief has been a visitor to my life more times than I can honestly say I am comfortable. I found from my childhood recollections, the night was the worst; fear was my frequent antagonist .Now, in the experience of my adult life, the same antagonist visits at all times of the day and night. My comfort was coming to know that the antagonist has only one stage on which to perform – my mind. It is my mind that carries my loss, my loneliness, my grief. I decided; the stage of my mind belongs to me, I am sole director of all productions on this stage.

The antagonist is now barred from all performances. Besides, what the antagonist never told me was: “This too shall pass, and the best is yet to come.” A wise person once said to me. Don’t push your grief away, you must deal with it. I marveled at those words, but as is so often the case, I forgot to ask how this was done. Just at that point, the words of Eckhart Tolle came to my mind, “Observe the thought, then let it go .” Whenever a memory (a thought) about the beloved ones I’ve lost, comes into my mind, I observe it (even to the point of shedding a tear, or more,) then I let it go. Not only is this practice a relief, but it has also become a pleasant experience too.

Peter’s Quote for The Day- The Sun Has NoSorrow.

Feature Photo by Kelly Sikkema Upsplash.com

The Only Trustyworth Shadow Comes From The Sun.

Have you ever stood on an early winter’s day, before the sun has reached its Zenith, and noticed you have a shadow? Did you also see, once the sun does get to its Zenith, your shadow slips away? I have often observed these interesting frolics of the sun. Did you notice something about your shadow? It moves wherever you do. I made a remarkable discovery. While my shadow is visible at certain times and other times it slips out of sight, It never leaves me. Because it is my shadow, not belonging to anyone else. But, there is a more sinister shadow that enters my life now and again. This shadow is named Sorrow. Of course, it has other names, too; depression, rejection, anxiety, fear, hopelessness, to mention just a few.

Whether the sun shines or not, this shadow is invisible. It never appears or disappears. It is an intruder on my life, although it never comes into my life uninvited. When conditions are favorable to this intruder, it taps on my mind and says, I have something to give you, and it’s entirely free.

My interest is piqued, and I respond, tell me more. As it is often said, ‘The rest is history.’

A sage counselor of mine warned me, “John be cautious, Sorrow, is not your shadow; it does not belong to you. You invite guests into your life but throw intruders out. Never entertain Sorrow; throw it out the door of your mind.”  “What shall I do then; try and be happy?” I questioned. “You can never try and be happy because happiness is a result of your state of being.” The counselor responded. “Become aware of your authentic self, the person inside you, untouched by all the spin-offs of life’s misfortunes, then happiness becomes your bedfellow, and you eject Sorrow.”

Weekly Words of Wisdom-The Dandelions.

Dandelions

Feature Photo by Galina Tcarkova Upsplash.com

Learn From The Dandelions

Looking out my window, I see hundreds of Dandelion seeds blown off the mother flowers into the wind. These float as lost and unsure of which way to go, sometimes shooting upward, sometimes downward. They have no fear, though, as their Guide, the wind, knows how to lead them to their destination. The seeds yield to the way of their Guide. Shouldn’t you and I do the same and surrender to our Guide?

Strange though it may seem, It has taken many years for me to grasp this principle of yielding to my Guide. Understanding this principle was easier than trying to apply it in my life, I’m sure you know what I mean.

While I was gazing at all the little yellow sticky notes surrounding my desk area, an idea came to me. Why not put a sticky note in my mind? I realize this may sound a little off the wall, but I felt it was worth a try.

If my Guide (who lives inside me) says it works, who am I to question the issue?

The next move was how I set about placing a sticky note into my mind. A reminder that will appear at an appropriate moment, just when I need it.

Have you ever tried focusing on something often enough, and eventually, it forms an image in your mind? So this is what I did after my Guide prompted me. Hey-Ho, sticky note, here we go!

In my following morning’s meditation time, I stuck the sticky note onto my mental vision board. Since then, I consciously see the little yellow message in front of me. When I become anxious about a particular event occurring in my life, I see the sticky note in my mind. I then allow myself to yield to my Guide. This arrangement never fails me.

Peter’s Quote for The Day – Let It Be

Let it Be

I love and enjoy learning. The hardest lesson I ever learned was how to let go. It’s not always easy, giving up on a fruitless situation I was hanging onto, hoping for change. My life has always been a teeter between holding on and letting go. I hold onto people, situations, and many things because I am afraid to let go. I did discover though, the more I let go, the less I needed to hold onto. Guess what? My fear disappeared and I’m more self-confident!

Peter’s Quote for The Day Owl Wisdom Symbol

owl

Feature Photo by Dušan Veverkolog Upsplash.com.

The Owl is a symbol of wisdom. Would this be because she avoids the senseless chirping and chatter around her during the day? She seeks her nourishment in the stillness of the night when all others are asleep. Maybe I should take a leaf out of her book. Speak less, listen more, and then, away from the maddening crowds, nourish my soul with words of wisdom.
